How long have you been with Sidewalk Surfer and what is your current role?
I started working at Sidewalk Surfer in the summer of 1980 at just 13 years old and still work there today 33 years later. Originally a job I picked up to kill some time between skate sessions, it has evolved into a big piece of my life that I couldn’t imagine being without. Right now I currently co-run the store alongside one of my best friends from childhood, Dave Carlson. Together we make it happen and of course our third apprentice Kevin Stern pulls his slack as well. We all have different areas of responsibility in the shop, but I mostly specialize in keeping our longboard section stocked with gear, as well as some of the apparel we have floating around. I really couldn’t ask for a better gig.
Tell us about your Chevy truck.
My baby is a 1965 Chevrolet C-10. She started her life with me as a rusted out backyard lot lizard, but with a frame-off full restoration we turned her into the beauty queen she is now. We started with the teardown of all the little pieces and extended out to the cab and bed, exactly what this old 65’ needed. With a bunch of good friends helping me get her body on point, the focus turned to the engine which is a small block 400 connected to a 700R4 transmission. After that came all the little details and getting it back together. Two years in the making and this truck lives better now than she did off the factory floor.
What is the best concert you have ever seen? Who is your favorite 80‘s band?
This is a really tough one to answer; there are so many good ones. I remember seeing The Ramones and The Dickies at the Hollywood Palladium and that was crazy. Between the janky beat-up limo, rental house in Newport Beach and car full of really good friends, it was an amazing time. I do have to say I think The Cult is my favorite band from the 80’s though.
What is your favorite travel destination?
I think the place I really enjoy going most is Mexico. La Paz is my most traveled destination and it’s gorgeous – although it’s not my only stop when traveling to the land of tequila, sunrise and fishing. I also really enjoy road tripping through the beautiful Grand Canyon State. With lots of terrain to make home all year round, you really get a diversity in landscape I haven’t been able to find anywhere else in such a small area.
Top 10 playlist, go!
Well first off, I have to say that I’m a food connoisseur so we’re going to throw this down as a bakers dozen and have a feast. I’d also like to add that a lot of my music knowledge comes from Kimber from Stinkweeds and my friend Keven Staab. I owe them most of the credit for turning me onto great new music.
